It is fun to stand on one
leg. Many of us might have done this as
a part of our play activity. We have
enjoyed all that during our growing years. Most of the time we do take it as a challenge
among friends as to who is able to stand with one leg for a longer time. The activity is coupled with fun and
excitement. But here the bunch of
students came together to stand on one leg for a good cause. It was a part of
the Fund raiser to raise awareness
regarding issues like child abuse. 360 students of Darien High School
participated in the School event which eventually led to scripting a World
Record.
The previous record for
most people standing on one leg counted to 339 and was set by Captain Morgan and the fans at the Rose Garden, in
Portland, Oregon, United States of America.
Child abuse is a serious offence. Any act of omission
or commission by a parent or care taker resulting in potential harm to the
child is called as child abuse. History teacher and advisor for the Event Lynn Brown said that it was the students who
brainstormed upon the idea to generate funds for child abuse prevention. It was
after all for a noble cause. Children are the gifts of God and it is up to the
adults to treat them with love and affection. Patrick Durkin one of the class
advisors zeroed on the idea while surfing the internet.
Durkin added
that he was thinking of ways to break a record which was fairly easy . Once
enough people gathered together to achieve the purpose they decided to do
something worthwhile . Brown laid the rules to set the record and made
everybody clear about the ground rules.
If
anybody tried to change feet, or touch another person, lost balance then he or
she would be disqualified from the event.
All the participants
had to stand on one leg for a record two minutes. However it did not prove too
difficult for the students to stand with one leg for such a short duration. The
entire bunch of 360 stood for two minutes and created history.
The most people standing
on one leg counted to 360 students of Darien High School at Darien,
Connecticut, United States of America on May 13, 2011.
