This
could be a nice grooming exercise for the budding chefs as well as a useful
publicity for the newly opened restaurant training laboratory. Republic Polytechnic's School of Hospitality which had just inaugurated its restaurant
which gave a chance to offer practical
hands on experience came up with a mega
venture . The venture was such that it not only provided the participants
a sound training in culinary expertise but also boosted the
goodwill of the institution.
And
this task ended being a world record. The
students prepared a ham and cheese
sandwich so long enough measuring 88 meters in length which became a new entrant for the longest
sandwich in the history of world records. The students and the school thus
sealed a place for themselves in the
history by staging the unique feat. The longest ham and cheese sandwich was
made by 70 staff and students of the
school. the measurement of the sandwich was certified by the National Metrology
Centre to ensure that it meets international standards. The participants
had every right to feel at the top of the world after having set the record was the fact that there was no previous record of the longest ham and cheese sandwich ever attempted before .
A
total of $27,200.00 has already been pledged by corporate donors for the event
and the money raised will go towards The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund
and the Republic Polytechnic Needy Student Fund. Republic Polytechnic's
School of Hospitality has close
working partnership with "Food from
the Heart". The sandwiches were distributed to 120 needy families. The restaurant training lab which is actually
patronized by real and customers and operated wholly by students would expose
the later to all sorts of culinary
operations and also fine tune them to face
the potential real life situations. The
students would learn to face operational issues and learn the knack of dealing
any problem in a given situation
effectively. The Students will
not only have to take charge of menu planning and food preparation but also
front-end management such as restaurant .
This initiative which was in line with
Republic Polytechnic ‘s aim to nurture confident, analytical and
creative problem solvers. This would also render the students to get
first hands on experience in all facets
of a good restaurant operation. Albert
Toh Director of the School of Hospitality commented that in a
way this would catapult a learning
environment beyond the regular classroom knowledge . the training lab was Developed
in consultation with industry partners and supported by various government
agencies and organizations including the Singapore Tourism Board, SPRING
Singapore, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, the National Environment
Agency and the Food and Beverage Managers Association. The Diploma
students would also get to learn from
experienced industry professionals.
The longest
ham and cheese sandwich measured 88
meters and was prepared by 70 staff and
students of Republic Polytechnic’s
School of Hospitality during the opening
of the Restaurant Training Lab at the
School Campus in Singapore on January 20,2011.
