Here we have some different news altogether. A swimming
pool becoming a pasta pool too. Company
employees are fashioning a drained swimming pool at a nearby hotel into a pasta
dish, which they hoped that it
would contain 10,000 pounds of
spaghetti. That will then be topped off with 120 gallons of Buca's homemade
marinara sauce and meatballs. Italian
restaurant Buca di Beppo filled a swimming pool repurposed as a
pasta bowl measuring 15' in diameter by 3.5' high with more than 13,786 pounds
of pasta and 120 gallons of sauce.
The previous record for the largest bowl of
pasta measured a weight of 9767
pounds and was set by Watniya Restaurants – Sbarro On March 28, 2009. After a week of
full-time working by at least 20 people, buckets of the cooked spaghetti were
dumped into an above-ground swimming pool disguised as a pasta dish in the Buca
di Beppo Italian Restaurant's parking lot. Six
chefs supervised the food preparation and production of the enormous spaghetti
bowl that also included more than 100 gallons of marinara sauce. The feat
was achieved with hundreds of on-lookers and Mayor William Dalton of the City of Garden Grove and
other city officials in attendance. To commemorate the massive
achievement, Buca di Beppo restaurants across the nation will celebrate on Monday, March 15 by offering free spaghetti to all guests who purchase
a Buca Large or Buca Small pasta or entree. In addition, for every portion of
spaghetti given away, Buca will match it with a donation of uncooked pasta to
various homeless charities with a minimum donation of 10,000 lbs of uncooked
pasta. None of the pasta from the record breaking event went to waste.
The pasta from the event was donated and repurposed by the local
agricultural community. The weight of the pasta was certified by a
notary officer. "We hit this one out of the park so the
record will stand for a while," said Kevin Sheehan, general manager of the
Italian eatery.
