A team of bakers have created the
world's largest Cornish pasty - measuring around 15ft in length and weighing
almost a ton. The 1,900lb (850 kg) 'snack' contained a staggering 1,750,000
calories and took 11 hours to cook in a specially built oven. The
record-breaking pasty was crammed full with 165 kg of beef skirt and sackfuls
of potatoes, onions and Swede. The bakers cooked up the snack as a part of the
TV Show Good Food TV series. The exact quantities were 180 lb of Swede, 100
lb of potatoes, and 75 Lb of onions.
The Cornish snack was hand crafted by six bakers from Proper Cornish and the team looked ecstatic after having broken
the world record. The pasty, which is over 4 meters
long, 1.4 meters wide and weighs almost 1 tonne, was made at Proper Cornish’s
factory in Bodmin, Cornwall. At the factory it was officially weighed before
being delivered to Fowey yesterday where it was measured and tasted before
being cut up and distributed to hundreds of hungry onlookers. The previous
record was 400 kg. The enormous meal
would have cost £7,000 to buy whole and was equivalent to around 3,500
normal-sized pasties. The huge pasty was
produced as a part of the new programme
Monster Munchies which was presented by Matt Dawson
and was aired on the week nights.
Monster Munchies, an RDF Television production, celebrates
Britain ’s best food by supersizing some classic dishes. Two local
businesses per area make two competing teams.
The
pasty was so large that it had to be transported by lorry to a
special weigh bridge for verification while it was still being cooked. A
special oven had to be built to accommodate the
giant sized pasty and to cook it well. The Proper Cornish
team beat rivals
Lostwithiel Bakery in the 24 hour race at Cornwall's Fowey Regatta and their
gigantic pasty was later broken up and dished out to the hungry crowd. Director Mark Muncey said his winning team were tired but very excited to have set a new benchmark after surpassing
the previous one.
The Largest Cornish Pasty weighed 850 Kg and was set by proper
Cornish at Bodmin, Cornwall, United
Kingdom on August 23, 2010.
