The long-standing world record for the largest tuna
ever caught has been shattered by a California man who caught a massive
405.2-pound yellow fin tuna. Mike Livingston caught the huge fish off
the Baja coast while on-board of the
Point Loma-based sport fishing 80ft vessel Vagabond during a Mexican trip. More than 100 people crowded around the fishing
hook scale at Point Loma Sport Fishing in San Diego to see the yellow fin tuna
— which measured 85 inches from nose to tail and 61 inches in girth — hoisted
into the air.
Livingston said he spent 2 hours, 40 minutes playing the giant fish before reeling it in. His previous personal record was 100 pounds. The beast was finally subdued by a Penn International 30SW reel blueprinted by Cal Sheets, a custom rod made by Livingston himself, and a 100-foot top shot of 100-pound test monofilament over more than 700 yards of 100-pound test super braid line, with a live sardine pinned on a 9/0 Owner Ringed Super Mutu hook.
Livingstone reminisced the whole experience as if it was a day to be called all for himself. He admitted that he wasn’t a great angler but certainly had enough experience to reel the tuna appropriately. Livingstone thanked his luck and felt the catch was indeed a fish of a life time . The Glendale administrator has smashed the former world record for the largest tuna ever caught as the previous weighed just 388 pounds, 12 ounce and was caught way back in 1977.Mr. Lackey the captain of the ship felt that it was a honour for the entire team to be a part of this mega successful operation. Looking at the huge tuna they felt it was an incredible specimen and raised bars for challenges and detractors of the record in the future.
It was the school administrator’s dream to at least catch an over 200
pound fish but this proved like a jackpot.
Livingstone had not even thought of in his wildest dreams that
he would procure a catch so huge as this one. He could only lean back in
harness after the 45 minute struggle to
the heavy packed credentials the fish ended up giving him.
Mr. Livingston's tuna is not only the
biggest ever landed by an angler, but it also is the largest ever caught
without any back-up reels or assistance from the crew. That season has been the time for big fishes for the San
Diego Sports fleet. Last time Oregon’s Greg Koonce caught a 379.8pound yellow fin
tuna. It was the third yellow fin over 300 pounds caught in the season.
The Largest Tuna ever
caught weighed 405 pounds and was set by
Michael Livingstone who caught the fish at
San Diego, United States of America on December 13, 2010.
