When Ladies get
together it could be just more than just
with the purpose of mere gossip. Their
actions would be speak dimensions for
their collective gathering. When the Country Women's
Association (CWA) set their sights on a giant record, they weren't just out for
a bit of fun. The project to create the world’s biggest scone is just
part of an awareness campaign being waged around Australia. A group of
Country Women Association (CWA)
ladies baked out a massive
178 Kg scone at the Cowra Show.
The previous record for the largest scone weighed was just 119.45
Kg and was set by Shaun Mc Carthy at Stark
Park in Eltham, New Zealand. Further the Mc Carthy ‘s scone also measured
117 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height.
The scone is a small British quick bread of Scottish
origin. Scones are especially popular in the United Kingdom, the United States,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, but are also eaten in many other
countries. The scone they cooked in Bathurst weighed in over
200kg but could not be entered into the record books because it wasn't cooked
all the way through. A new attempt at the scone will be made in the lead up to
CWA Awareness Day, a push to get the nation thinking about the work the CWA
does. With approximately 9000 members in NSW the CWA is still a very strong
community organization but they have recently been losing members at an
increased rate. Jocelyn Cameron , State Honorary
Secretary for the CWA of New South Wales said that it was imperative that the organization
started attracting new members. As it was important to get the new
generation into the association. With
many volunteer organization having come into the race it was crucial for the CWA to maintain its identity and
reinstate its role to the
society. Cameron also added that the members of the CWA had to work hard for the people to be aware of their role in the community. Jocelyn
wants to remind people that the CWA isn't just about cooking Apart from
cooking we are active in all sorts of community activities. From
fundraising for local health and educational institutions to lobbying the
government on community issues, members can get involved in a variety of
activities. A part of the
CWA is also devoted to raising money for international
communities. The organization wants
fresh induction of members irrespective of their age. So it is a desperate
intention to get more and more people
involved in the varied activities of the CWA and be more focused on community development. The
CWA State
Land Cookery Committee and the State president, Elaine Armstrong, were up
mixing and preparing the ingredients at 7am. The flour was
supplied by White Wings – all 111kg of it. Also used was 33 liters of milk;
4.5kg of butter, 4.5kg of castor sugar and 492 grams of baking powder. Baking
such a mammoth scone posed a lot of challenges for the CWA members, including
figuring out the correct quantities of mixture needed and the best temperature
to set the oven at. Mrs. Armstrong said six ladies helped mix it and it
took 13 hours to cook. She said the scone was made to help raise awareness for
CWA Awareness Day. The world's largest scone was then transported to
Martin Place in central Sydney to be featured on the Sunday Sunrise TV show. Starting
from humble beginnings in 1922, the CWA now boasts some 25,500 members in 1500
branches nationally, who are looking and listening for ways to improve the
opportunities for women and their families in local communities.
The Largest Scone
measured a weight of 178 Kg and was set
by Country Women Association at COWRA,
New South Wales, Australia on September 19, 2011.
