Most record holders are not content to rest on their laurels
and Handy International–a 100+-year-old Maryland seafood processor–is no
exception. Handy International has
broken the world record for the largest crab cake. Handy first set the
record for largest crab cake in 2006 and then broke that record in 2009 with a
253-pound crab cake at the Honfest in
Hampden, Maryland. That crab cake was cooked in a specially-built pan that
weighed almost as much as the ingredients themselves, took 9 hours to cook and
required 4 men to lift.
The Handy International team decided to start
cooking in the wee hours so that sufficient time was given to cook
evenly through the dawn hours and the
giant piece gets ready for the ravenous lunchtime crowd. Everyone around were super
excited after the cake got ready as they wanted to know the number of sandwiches the
colossal crab cake would yield. Handy International is a family-owned company
and is America’s oldest seafood processor. Products include soft crabs, crab
meat, crab cakes, crab specialty items, oysters and artisanal fish. Handy International, a Maryland seafood processor,
broke their world record for the largest crab
cake on September 1 at
the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The huge 300 lb. crab cake topped their
previous 2009 record by 47 lbs. Using a true Maryland-style recipe, there was a
minimum of ingredients added which allowed the fresh Smith Island crab meat to
be the star. The cake was made with 200 pounds of crab meat. The largest crab cake in the world was cooked in a rotisserie
style cooker designed by Handy Seafood's Jim Cupp. Crab Cake sandwiches served on buns donated by Maryland State
Fair sponsor Schmidt's Baking Company were sold for $8 each with proceeds
benefiting the Maryland 4-H Foundation.

Terry Conway the chief of Handy

He said that the cake tasted extremely delicious and was glad that the $3127 generated
would benefit the Maryland 4H Foundation. Handy thanked all the
