The 2008
Iowa State Fair was a relishing and rejuvenating experience for the crowd. The glamour of a world record,
paired with free admission and a free corndog, contributed to the largest
opening day attendance on record. The Administration Building celebrated its
150th year on the grounds. An Olympic Pavilion set up near Rock Island Avenue
offered continuous televised coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and
Fairgoers watched as Des Moines native and butter-sculpture subject Shawn
Johnson took home gymnastics gold.
The Corn Dog Chomp was a part of the ceremonial preparations. About 8400 persons set out to simultaneously eat corndog
chomps during the fair. Gary Slater the Fair
manager expressed great happiness stating that the turnout was huge and this
showed that Iowans are eager to enjoy every minute of the fair. The
8,000 corn dogs went fast, another 400 were quickly distributed. At about 8:50
a.m. Thursday everyone who had one took a bite at the same moment. They
chompers simultaneously munched all over the Grandstand, some fairgoers went
without. The 2008 Iowa State Fair celebrates
the passion Fairgoers have for the state's great Fair and all the traditions
they look forward to each year, including food, fun, free entertainment,
competition, livestock and people watching. For the first time in
history, the Fair offered free admission at the gate from 5-8:30 a.m. and a
free corndog at opening ceremonies. More
than 42000 persons rushed through the gate to attend the fair.
Campbell’s Concessions cooked the corn dogs and Sysco provided
the hot dogs.
