If your kids were
there today they would have also been proud world record
holders. Pat Liebler a
Beverly elementary School Parent and a lead organizer
commented it was a record setting
event.
A lot of lemonade indeed . As part of a
fundraiser for Birmingham and Detroit schools, Beverly students are
planning to build what they hope will be the world’s longest lemonade stand
Aug. 20 at Beverly Park to celebrate National Lemonade Day. The project,
led by Beverly parent Pat Liebler, began more than a year ago when a group of
teachers sat down to figure out how to get students involved in a district wide
fundraising project. Liebler said
that every kid wanted to start a lemonade
stand. According to
Liebler, the project has three goals: to provide an engaging learning
experience for students, bring the community together and raise funds for
education and the community. The biggest task, though, is selling stands, said
sales organizer Jeanne De Ronne. Individual stands are available for $50, with
organizers hoping to attract families, clubs, sports teams, businesses and area
nonprofit groups. The stands, designed by parent volunteer Keith Larson, are
identical wood-construction units, around 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. The World's Longest Lemonade Stand was 349 individual
lemonade stands that were purchased by community members. Larson said each stand can be constructed using
only a screwdriver and can be transported in the back of any sport utility
vehicle or van. Buyers then may decorate the stands any way they like.
The finished stands will be connected by
extension pieces, linking the collection to form what organizers hope will be
the longest stand in the world. Currently, the record for the world’s longest
lemonade stand is 1,200 feet, set June 6 in Satow , Germany.
While selling
lemonade isn’t exactly the intent of the event, Liebler said that to set the
record, each stand will have to offer lemonade for sale for around 10 seconds
on event day.
Liebler said the
entire team anticipates the event to have a carnival-type feeling, with games
and food likely to be available. With
the official length of 1,399 feet, 11 inches, the lemonade stand build by
hundreds of students, parents and teachers from the Birmingham Public Schools
District at Beverly Park in Beverly Hills.
The event has raised $50,000 so far, with more money coming in throughout the day in the form of lemonade, T-shirt and raffle ticket sales. Half of the proceeds, $25,000, was from sponsors, led by presenting sponsor Ernst & Young. Organizers passed two large glasses of lemonade from stand to stand to prove continuity, then measured the stand length with a tape measure.
Longest Lemonade Stand would like to thank to valued sponsors including: Ace Hardware, Achatz Pie Company, Beverly Community Education, Birmingham Pediatrics, Blvd Suites, Bolyard Lumber, Brady's Tavern, Dynamic Life Chiropractic, Edible Arrangements, Edward Jones, Ernst & Young, Girls Empowered, Goldfish, GS Leasing, Huron Capital, Marketing Associates, Northwestern Mutual, Pop Can Couture, Premier Pet Supply, Restyle Child, Robot Garage, Senior Helpers, Staff works, Wolf Hulbert Insurance, and Wonderworks.
The Longest lemonade
Stand measured 1399 ft , 11 inches was set by hundreds of students, parents and
teachers at Beverly Hills, Michigan, United States of America on August 29,
2011.
