Loving Chocolates at 100 Courtesy Thorntons

Thorntons produced the mega bar to celebrate its 100th birthday - and judging by the size of the super snack there'll be a lot of bulging stomachs as a result of this confectionary construction. The idea for the record breaking bar came from a chocolate loving employee who was a big fan of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Even the most dedicated chocoholic would struggle to get their teeth into this bar. Combining the company's centenary and Chocolate Week celebrations,  Thorntons  has created a giant chocolate bar measuring four meters wide by four meters long and weighing in at a staggering 5,792.5kg (that's almost six Tons ) - which sets the new world record for the Largest chocolate bar.
Paul Bell, a stock controller in   Thorntons   toffee department, came up with the idea to celebrate the centenary and said creating it was no mean feat. There were more than 50 persons to pour the chocolate into the mould   and it took ten hours to cool   and settle down.
Bell, 34, from Heanor, was the first person to pour a bucket of chocolate into the stainless steel mould and said the recipe was exactly the same as Thorntons   standard milk chocolate. An average bar weighs about 80g (2.8oz). The bar will not go to waste. Bell said it will be broken up with axes and given to Thorntons staff and customers in shops, as well as helping to raise money for charities. Bell admitted that although  he in the midst of chocolates everyday has never made him feel sick of chocolates. He said that it goes as a perk  with his job of getting a  chance  to eat a chocolate almost every day. He also added that  everyone came up with a  variety of ideas  to celebrate Thorntons  centenary celebrations.
Keith Hurdman said that it was one of the biggest challenge ever faced   at Thorntons and that had resulted in all the chefs  putting their chocolate making skills and expertise to test. The yummy bar would be shared among the Thornton staff and would help in  raising funds  for good use.
Hurdman also expressed pride at the accomplishment and said that the entire operation required enormous planning and execution. Gifting the company a world record title  during its centenary celebration was really one fitting tribute to the  reputed chocolate maker.
The previous record for the largest chocolate   weighed 5529.29 Kg and was held by an American Confectioner who had made news the previous month. So Thorntons came up with a  fitting reply  in excess of 260 Kg   in just about a  month’s time taking advantage of  their 100th anniversary.
The Largest chocolate bar weighed  5792.5 Kg and measured 4m*4m  square was set by Thorntons on the occasion of their 100th anniversary celebrations at Somercotes, Derbyshire, United Kingdom on October 13, 2011.
