Relay For Life is the main volunteer-driven cancer fund
raising event of the
American Cancer Society. Originating in the United States, the Relay For Life event has spread
to 21 countries. Relay
events are held in local communities, campus universities, military bases, and
in cyber space . Although the main objective of
Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is
held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember
those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight
against cancer. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised over $3
billion to date. The community as a whole comes forward to offer their support
to survivors to fight out the dreaded
disease. Further funds are raised for cancer research so that
sufficient medical technology and drugs are invented to combat the disease and save lives
as much as possible.
The members of the Gulf High School Interact Club
promoted the Relay for Life event at the school which would directly benefit the American Cancer
Society. They raised the 10ft tall cup cake pyramid which consisted of 13476 cup cakes. David Leathers, a member of the New Port Richey Relay for Life
entertainment committee. Said that
it was an amazing show put up by the
community.
Birthdays
are a dominant theme in American Cancer Society promotions and public relations
efforts. The organization refers to itself as "The official sponsor of
birthdays" and has a running "creating a world with more
birthdays" ad campaign.
The
individual cupcakes would serve as a nice bit of symbolism, representing
individual cancer survivors celebrating another birthday.
Shawn Foster, event chairman for the New Port Richey Relay for Life, reported that overall attendance for the fundraiser was up considerably that year. Farrell Roofing offered to design the cup cake tower and erected 14 levels into the tower. The proceeds of the event would go to Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Association.

As
much as 4 million people from over 20 countries
come forward to take part in this global phenomenon and raise the much needed funds for cancer research and also to bring out
about an awareness to save lives. Then
the relay also has the remember event to pay respect and honour those lives
lost to cancer. There is a Fight
Back event in which cancer survivors are given support and hope in which they are truly inspired to take as much
tangible action against the
disease that has taken away so much from
them.
