Annoyed by people making your carpets all muddy? Really want to emphasise the importance of people wiping their feet? An Indian doormat may have the solution for your worries. The makers have creating the world's longest doormat, measuring more than 330 feet.Travancore Cocotufts has delivered a one stop solution to all the complaints of making the house dirty after the current bad weather. The longest doormat can just be the right thing you are looking at.
The mat made at Travancore Cocotuft (P) Ltd factory measures 101.6 meters (333.3ft) in length, 1.2 meters (4ft) in width, is 30mm thick and weighs 999 kg setting the world record for the Largest Doormat ever.Four workers workers of Travancore Cocotuft Ltd. have spent months creating the world’s longest doormat hand-woven from coconut coir.
The mat had consumed 4,70,000 coir tufts inserted between alternate wefts of coir yarn. Total cost of this, 101.6 meters long, 1.2 meters wide and 30 mm thick mat, is over Rs 400,000.
A unique way of thinking from P.Mahadevan the Chairman of Cocotufts. This shows that positive mindset even during the time of crisis can really help and do wonders. At a time when the coir industry was facing a plethora of problems like migration of workers to more lucrative sectors, shortage of manpower ,scarcity of raw materials Cocotufts has set the world record by creating the Longest Doormat and thus brought the world attention to the plagued coir sector.
The Longest doormat was formally released during the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI) of the Coir Board. The Longest doormat is an idea of Mr. Mahadevan, inspired by Alappuzha BDS project of SIDBI executed by Cluster Pulse. The Longest doormat will be exhibited at the Buckingham Palace and will also be presented before the then President Ms. Pratibha Patil, and finally, be offered to the Coir Museum.
The coir industry in Kerala has a history that spans over a century and employs in excess of 1.5 lakh weavers and spinners numbering four lakhs in the state. Lack of modernisation in the industry and a stiff rise in wages of workers have resulted in only 50 percent of coconut husks being used in the coir industry, while the rest is being used as fuel in rural areas.
So this was a really thoughtful way of the Company Chairperson Mr. Mahadevan to have woven such a beautiful idea to weave the longest door mat thus showcasing the fineness of the coir craft at the same time bringing the focus to the coir industry it rightfully deserved especially for developing countries like India .Coir industry is a part of the major small scale industries and they need to be improved to put the developing and the less developed Nations on the growth frontier.
The Longest Doormat was set by Travancore Cocotufts Limited at Chertala,Kerala on February 6,2010.
