Well most of us know the concept of letter writing thanks to the fair idea taught to us at school. But hardly anyone would actually take up a pen and paper to sit down and write letters to relatives and friends. It has become a fashion of the past.We could ask our parents or grandparents about letters and you can just notice that instant spark in their eyes.Letters were the backbone of their communication .Letters were widely written and posted across all parts of the world say about three to four decades back. But not anymore. With the mobile phones. emails, short message service (SMS) and so many recent software applications coming up of late that the old letters for sure have taken the back seat.Considering the alarming speed at which the most of the communication gets transmitted in the shortest possible time letters have roughed up feathers with the latest entrants in the communication technology.
But however Romanian students have a different belief system altogether.Over two thousand school children aged 8 to 14, wrote in nine days a 413,80 m (1357.61 feet) long letter to Santa Claus-setting the world record for the Longest letter to Santa Claus. For the past 10 days a paper roll longer than 300 meters was getting circulated in the local schools at Brasov city.
The campaign was an initiative of the Romanian Post Office and the local school inspectorate. Each child poured his or her wish mostly requesting Santa to get the adults to stop cutting trees and protect the environment. As all the children got to write on the same thin rolled paper to make it the Longest letter to Santa they ended up saving f pounds of paper by not writing in separate letters & envelopes. The Romanian Post Office paid the postage for the Longest letter to Santa Claus and will bring two of the schoolchildren to visit Santa's official residence in Finland.
The giant letter was sent to Santa’s official "residence":
Santa Claus,
Arctic Circle,
96930,
Rovaniemi, Finland
The Longest letter to Santa Claus will be then taken back to Romania, to be included into a local world records exhibition. The end result of this mega activity was to recycle the paper roll and turn it into exercise books for the children.
A positive approach taken up by the local school authorities and the Romanian Postal department to emphasise the importance of saving the trees and natural resources.
The Longest letter to Santa was set by the Romanian Post at Brasov,Romania on December 19,2008.
