Can you think of the Longest wooden Chain carved from a single piece of wood.Markley Noel can give a few tips in this regard.Noel had finished carving a 480 foot long wooden chain from a single plank of maple which contains 1993, 4 inch by 1 1/2 inch links, that are cut from a 25 foot by 2 foot plank of maple wood.He completed his wooden chain in August 2009. It was officially measured on October 2, 2009 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The continuous chain of interlocked wooden links was carved from a single slab of wood measuring 25 feet long, about 25 inches wide and 2.5 inches thick. The 1,993 links are 4 inches long by about 1.5 inches wide and about a half inch thick.
Markley Noel felt like as though he had climbed up the Mount Everest or ran a big marathon after completing his masterpiece which was the fruit of his almost decade long effort. The inspiration to to carve the wooden chain just came from within for Noel.he wanted to do something extra large, totally out of the world using his skills so taht the world would always remember him as an artist. As he started working on the plank, cutting, taking measurements the work started to progress.Seeing the work moving it kind of became an obsession to achieve something extraordinary.
He carefully measured and marked 15 rows or courses on the plank. Then Noel was able to sketch out alternating horizontal and vertical interlocking links .With his careful carving of the links he made a brilliant pattern out of it to amke it look like a long wooden chain or garland.
The retired builder started the project in October 2001 when he cut down a silver maple tree from his father's woodlot in Augusta. When he started the project, Noel carefully cut three slabs of wood from his father's tree. But he only used one of the slabs for his "Chain of Life."
As the slab had to dry for a year Noel was unable to cut his first link till December 2002.Previously he had applied green wood stabiliser to the slab to minimise cracking as they tend to get dried. The craftsman had to remain focused throughout to ward off any imperfections. It took him almost six weeks to carve the interlocking links from the top row of the plank .The links took over an hour to carve as he had to use variety of tools to size them to the desired shape .
The Longest wooden chain was set by Markley Noel at his workplace at Hickory Corners,Michigan,United States of America on September 2,2009.
