Largest Portable Hammock

The hammock is often seen as symbol of summer, leisure, relaxation and simple, easy living.Hansy Better Barraza aged 34 years a Roslindale architect and professor at Rhode Island School of Design, designed a 33-foot-long and about 264 square feet hammock , installed in the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in Boston. This idea inspired her after she won a grant at the Awesome foundation which donates money for an interesting project. So Hansy steered in to the project with the help of the funds and volunteers to assist by putting together 4,278 ft of rope made from recycled bottles.
There is a rich cultural history of hammocks within the arts, as a woven net or fabric cloth, they are simple in gesture, form and execution. Situating a hammock within a public park can elevate the social implication of that object. The hammock is intended to serve the community as a simple lounge space as well as a sculptural expression. It is intended to create a new way to interact with and admire the urban and historical setting, complimenting the Greenway as space of public leisure. At the intersection of Oliver Street and Atlantic Avenue, the 8’ x 38’ wide hammock will be located at Parcel 19 in the Fort Point Channel Parks area. The hammock will be on a self supporting steel frame and hang 36” high from the ground. One may think of the hammock as a new suspended common ground where the individual’s weight, size and position are in concert with other bodies on the hammock. It is a social ground. The hammock has been installed at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and oliver street in the new Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy of downtown Boston.
The volunteer team to build the hammock in August is comprised of designers, students, and faculty brought together by design professor and architect, Hansy Better Barraza. Together with Textile Collaborator Ruth Bohn, Structural Engineer Erik Nelson, and enthusiastic volunteers, the hope is to create an interactive symbol of community.
The largest Hammock was created by Hancy Butter Barraza in Boston,Massachusetts,United States of America on August 20,2010.
