Walking on the sands of the puri beach in Orissa would leave you shell shocked looking at the sand artists at work.Also the huge 100 ft long sand sculpture of the Santa Claus embedded on the sands looking at the sky with utmost serenity.That was one of the the creative outburst coming from Sudarshan Patnaik's plate.
Yes this young man is the first self taught sand artist from India.Sand art which has its origins from Orissa had almost no recognition until this man made news with his talent for making anything from sand.
It would have been a real treat to your eyes around the winter time of 2008 to see Sudarshan Patnaik giving the final touches to the sculpture.The ace sand craftsman has used more than 1000 tones of sand to create the 100 ft long,30 ft wide and 15 ft high Santa the greatest gift he gave to everyone on the eve of Christmas.Christmas lovers around the world could not have asked for something better.
Thousands of local people as well as tourists from both inside the country and outside had gathered on the beach to have a look at the colourful structure.Talking about his work Patnaik admitted that it took him nearly 30 hours to sculpt the 25 ft tall structure.he was assisted by 15 students from the Puri Golden Sand Art Institute.The well known sand artist who had already won more than 35 international sand art championships including world titles said he had decided to dedicate his latest creation for world peace in this troubled time. “Peace is the only battle worth waging" is what he strongly voiced through the Santa Model.
The structure depicts Santa pleading to the world to restore peace and tranquility in the world.
The fine colourful masterpiece of Sudarshan Patnaik won the record of the tallest Santa Claus Sand Sculpture in Puri Beach,Orissa on December 24,2008.
