The Adelaide Christmas Pageant was founded by Sir Edward Hayward owner of the
Adelaide department store John Martin’s , who was inspired by the Toronto Santa Claus
Parade and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He opened the first pageant on 18
November 1933 at the height of the Great Depression
. It was a success; running for around 40 minutes
with just 8 floats and 3 bands, it attracted 200,000 spectators
. Father Christmas was
introduced in 1934 and tradition of the pageant finishing at the Magic Cave was
established. David Jones bought
over John Martins, and sold the rights of the pageant to the South Australian
Government.
The Adelaide Christmas Pageant is a parade held annually in the
South Australian capital of Adelaide.
It is the largest event of its kind in the
world, attracting crowds of over 400,000 and televised to millions. The chalk-covered streets of Adelaide were
filled with the sound of
Christmas carols as 9100 singers from the Credit Union Christmas Pageant
sung a 15-minute rendition of Christmas songs.
And there is some more news toppings
for avid readers. The current record has surpassed the
previous record for the Largest Carol Singers which
comprised a meager 7514 set at Bob
Jones University, South Carolina.
The
credit unions are very proud of their commitment to the Credit Union Christmas
Pageant, an event that is free, brings people together and literally brings the
entire city to a standstill .
The
Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian
Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government and sponsored
by five leading credit unions in South Australia - Savings & Loans,
Australian Central, Community CPS Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit
Union.
The
Largest Group of Carol Singers was set by 9100 Carol Singers from the Credit Union Christmas Pageant at Adelaide, Australia on November 15,2010.
